Building a Better Yuma!
Minx Entertainment Complex of Yuma (MEC-Y)

With a current void in contemporary adult age entertainment in Yuma, despite the large demographic of 21 to 65 year olds within a 20 mile radius, Minx Entertainment Complex of Yuma (MEC-Y) will feature a contemporary entertainment club, dance floor / night lounge, comedy club and social venues, a sports bar and two restaurants for upscale and family dining.

This 60,000 square foot mixed-use development offers specialty shopping, dining, family fun and entertainment for children, tweens, teens and adults within an exciting, urban atmosphere in Yuma’s growing city center. Ideally located within an area of residential, hotel and retail commercial growth, MEC-Y will enjoy superb visibility from the high volume arterial intersections of 16th Avenue, Giss Parkway, Castle Dome Road and US Interstate Highway 8 (Highest Average Daily Traffic in Yuma).

The Birth of the MINX Entertainment Complex in Yuma

Starting with a concept two years ago of creating, developing and bringing exciting, quality entertainment to Yuma, Dr. Kirk Minkus, an Interventional Radiologist at the Yuma Regional Medical Center, proposed this idea to his family and, with his father, purchased a parcel of land just north of the Yuma Palms Mall to build this vision into a reality.

In January 2007 the family purchased 6 acres of land on Castle Dome and 10th St. and then learned several months later that the City was proposing to build a 6,000 seat Event Center on adjacent land. The Minkus family commissioned Northern Arizona University of Yuma to perform a market research study that disclosed an underserved need for mixed-use entertainment, quality nightlife and specialty retailers that can provide for family lifestyle needs. Realizing the needs of local & regional citizens & families, young professionals, visitors and tourists, the multifunctional MINX Complex concept was formed.

Conceptual plans and contemporary designs of the Minx Complex have been developed by a cadre of Yuma contractors, consultants and an award winning architectural team from Scottsdale, AZ. The Minx Complex renderings have already won national award recognition for 'Architectural Design Innovation in Yuma, AZ' and can be seen in the '2008 Best of Arizona' Business Magazine and was displayed at the ‘International Council of Shopping Centers’ Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV in May, 2008 that was attended by 40,000 people from around the world.

With the current, but temporary challenging economic, banking and equity market conditions, the Minkus' know that their inspiring project could be a bit ambitious for Yuma. While most of the community agrees that “Yuma needs this SO badly,” they also ask, “Why has it taken so long for someone to build this kind of entertainment environment?” The answer is that an entertainment and specialty retail district like this requires local and regional people traffic and a driving force like the Event Center to create that balance and flow.

When the Event Center was proposed and approved by the Yuma City Council in January 2008, it seemed that the stars were aligned for the Minx Complex, because for such a large project, financial backers really desire having a "catalyst" like the Event Center to generate enough "people" traffic for their piece of mind. Plans started moving forward on making the Minx Entertainment Complex of Yuma a reality until the referendum on the Event Center was initiated in March 2008. The Minkus family is still extremely interested in building their entertainment complex in all its glory (see conceptual rendering by clicking on the link), but their financial backers will help them develop this Complex ONLY if they can show that they have the necessary "people" traffic and retail tenants to better ensure its success. Therefore, voter approval of the Event Center signals that the people of Yuma are ready for the Minx Entertainment Complex and it will also attract a variety of other entertainment venues and private developers that could include a fun water park adventure.

If the Yuma voters do not VOTE YES and pass the referendum on the Event Center on November 4th, the Minkus family still plans to develop their MINX facility to the best they can achieve with the financial resources they’ll have available. However, it will most likely be a much scaled down version of their original plan, growth being limited by economic conditions and a lack of development in the area.
